Jim Garcia appointed to Denver's Board of Environmental Health

January 18, 2012 – Denver's Department of Environmental Health is pleased to announce the appointment of Jim García, executive director and founder of Clinica Tepeyac, to Denver's Board of Environmental Health.

Garcia has been actively involved in Denver's non-profit community for more than 22 years, working in various capacities for a wide range of health and human service organizations.

In addition to having nonprofit experience, Garcia also worked in the political arena for former Senator Tim Wirth and former Governor Roy Romer.

In 1994, Garcia founded Clínica Tepeyac, a community-based health center that provides primary care health services, behavioral health services and health education to Denver's uninsured, predominantly Mexican immigrant, population.

In January of 2011, Garcia was appointed as executive director.

Originally from Albuquerque, New Mexico, Garcia received an undergraduate degree from Regis University and master's degree in public administration from the University of Colorado at Denver. His wife, Gloria, and his children, Sofia and Lucas, provide a constant source of inspiration.

"Jim brings our Board a valuable connection to the community. As a health care provider, Clinica Tepeyac is on the front line, providing preventative services and medical care to a large population at the neighborhood level," says Doug Linkhart, Manager of Denver Environmental Health. "Jim has many years of experience in serving Denver residents and will be a great addition to our Board."

Denver's Department of Environmental Health includes Public Health Inspections (PHI), Environmental Quality (EQ), Animal Care & Control (ACC), the Office of the Medical Examiner (OME), and Community Health and Decision Support (CHDS).

Dr. Miranda, one of our long-time volunteers, recently shared the story of a patient named
Stephanie who was suffering from a severe case of type 1 diabetes. When she first
arrived at Clinica Tepeyac, she had experienced dramatic weight loss (over 50 lbs. in a six
month period). Along with her rapidly deteriorating physical condition, Stephanie was also
diagnosed with cataracts in both eyes. Dr. Miranda mentioned that when he first met with
her, he was struck by the fact that she was virtually blind and was only able to make out
shapes.

Stephanie is only 14 years old.

Within a relatively short period of time, after being treated by Dr. Miranda and our medical
staff, Stephanie's health began to dramatically improve. She began to gain weight and the
other diabetic symptoms began to subside. Despite this major progress, the unresolved
issue of the cataracts and resulting blindness still had to be addressed. With her overall
health condition now stabilized, Stephanie was referred to an eye surgeon, who for years
has provided his services at a reduced rate for Clinica patients. Once the cataracts were
removed, Stephanie's vision rapidly returned to normal.

Fast-forward now to two weeks ago when Stephanie arrived for her most recent check-up,
now at a healthy weight, with 20/20 vision and back in school as a high school freshman!
